The God Who Refreshes His Children
Series: Beatitudes
Matthew 5:5

This is the 4th in this series on the Beatitudes from the Sermon on The Mount
Salvation is a process – a journey First step is to realize I AM NOT GOD I AM MORALLY BANKRUPT I AM HELPLESS WITHOUT GOD I AM LOST WITHOUT GOD

Step 2 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” I believe God can save me I believe God can help me

Step 3 “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”

By now the ones listening to Jesus teaching Had to have been numb with shock Totally perplexed JESUS WAS TEACHING PRINCIPLES THAT WERE FOREIGN TO THEIR MINDS

Like many in churches all over America today Jesus audience Knew how to act spiritually proud Act spiritually self-sufficient

Whatever method the various individuals/groups expected Messiah to come THEY DID NOT ANTICIPATE HIS COMING HUMBLY AND MEEKLY YET THESE ARE THE ATTITUDES JESUS IS PRACTICING AND TEACHING

I. Are You Meek?

Meek – basically means mild – soft – gentle Sometimes the term was used to describe a soft breeze A soothing medicine Means to be submissive, quiet, tenderhearted Moved with compassion Be willing to carry the burdens of others

Meekness is the way of the NEW TESTAMENT

In Ephesians 4: 1-2 “walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility, gentleness and patience, showing forbearance to one another in love.”

In Colossians 3:12 “put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

In Titus 3:1-2 remind those in positions of leadership within the church

“to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, to malign no one, to be uncontentious, gentle, showing every consideration for all men.”

MEEKNESS DOES NOT MEAN WEAKNESS MEEKNESS MEANS POWER UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

Three obstacles to being meek

1. The obstacle of pride “The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin.” ~ Proverbs 10:8

Pride prevents you from admitting you need help So many believers are struggling with wounds, hurts, bad habits And they have too much pride to admit they need help. THEY WALK INTO LIFEPOINT ON SUNDAY MORNING WEARING A PLASTIC SMILE ACTING AS IF NOTHING IS WRONG

2. The obstacle of guilt “Troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.” ~ Psalm 40:12

Maybe you have asked God so many times for help – for forgiveness And you are embarrassed to ask again

GOD WILL NEVER SAY I WILL NOT HELP YOU AGAIN I HELPED YOU FOR THE LAST TIME A FEW MONTHS AGO Scripture teaches MERCY IS EVERLASTING Do not allow the enemy to block your way to God with guilt

3. The Obstacle of fear “Fear and trembling have surrounded me, horror has overwhelmed me. ~Psalm 55:5

II. How Do We Become Meek?

This word is totally misused and misunderstood in our culture World does not present CEO of Fortune 500 company as meek NFL Quarterbacks are not meek TODAYS CULTURE TEACHES THE MEEK ARE PASSIVE, WEAK, MILD, WIMPS A COMPLIANT DOORMAT SOMEONE WHO PERMITS PEOPLE TO WALK ALL OVER THEM

May I introduce you this morning to the model of meekness This man modeled his entire life in meekness

Jesus said “I am gentle and humble of heart” ~ Matthew 11:29

MEEKNESS IS OUR STRENGTH UNDER THE CONTROL OF JESUS WHEN JESUS WAS ON CROSS HE COULD HAVE CALLED 72,000 ANGELS HE HAD THAT STRENGTH BUT UNDER CONTROL

III. Have You Placed Christ In Control Of Your Life?

Paul describes surrender of our lives like this: “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: take your everyday, ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going to work, and walking around life – and place it before God as an offering.” ~ Romans 12:1 (The Message)

May I give 3 characters found in scripture who demonstrated meekness

1. Abraham God gave him 1,000 of acres of rich land in the Promised Land. His servants and nephew Lot got into an argument over who had the right to use the land. ABRAHAM RATHER THAN STANDING UP FOR HIS OWN RIGHTS Preferred the testimony of harmony gave up the land And left to find other land

2. Joseph Spoiled by his father as the favorite, Abused by his jealous brothers Yet when they came to Egypt asking for food so they would not Starve during the famine JOSEPH RATHER THAN REFUSING GAVE ONLY FORGIVENESS AND LOVE

3. David Chosen by God – anointed by Samuel To replace Saul as King of Israel Saul jealous of David because people loved him Plotted to kill him David ran for his life SUDDENLY HE FOUND HIMSELF IN A CAVE SAUL WAS ASLEEP IN THE CAVE AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO ASSISNATE THE KING “Far be it from me that I should take the kings life because of the Lord that I should do this thing to my Lord, the kings anointed to stretch out my hand against him, since he is the Lord’s anointed.” ~ 2 Samuel 24:5-6

Years later when David’s rebellious son Absalom had driven his father from the capital city of Jerusalem Another distant relative of David’s cursed King David Threw stones at him David’s soliders wanted to retaliate David prevented them “Behold, my son who came out from me seeks my life; how much more now this Benjamite? Let him alone and let him curse, for the Lord has told him. Perhaps the Lord will look on my affliction and return good to me instead of cursing this day.” ~ 2 Samuel 24:5-6

Meekness is strength under the control of God GOD WANTS TO BREAK YOU AND PLACE YOU UNDER HIS AUTHORITY GOD WANTS YOU SENSITIVE TO HIS LEADERSHIP RATHER THAN FOLLOWING YOUR OWN WILL HE WANTS YOU TO FOLLOW HIS WILL

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

“Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.” ~ 11 Corinthians 7:10

    Blessed- means happy.

    I. God Does Exist Whether I Believe Or Not

“Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” ~ Hebrews 11:6

“When I consider the heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place…The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of your hands.” ~ Psalm 8:3; 19:1

II. Once You Believe God Does Exist What Kind Of God Is He?

    2. God cares about everything happening in our lives every day“As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.” ~ Psalm 103:13-14

    3. God has the power to change our situation “what is impossible with men is possible with God” ~ Luke 18:27

Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” ~ Matthew 5: 1-3

    I. Your Life Will Crash Because We Are Sinners
“I know that I have nothing good in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.” ~ Romans 7:18

II. Many Choose Rebellion Over Release
    1. Fear
“I heard you in the garden God, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” ~ Genesis 3:10
Adam never experience fear until he sinned

    2. Frustration

mercy to you.” ~ Proverbs 28:13

    Series: Beatitudes
Hebrews 10: 19-25 “Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” ~ Hebrews 10: 19-25 ESV I. What Can Believers Do When The Foundations Of America Are Being Destroyed?
    Series: (All)
    Psalm 11:3
Almost 22 million federal state local government workers 2 million, 738 thousand work for federal government 1842 federal spending was 2% of our GNP 2016 federal spending is over 25% of our GNP
Dr Elmer Peterson, Dean of the College of Education at Iowa State University wrote in an editorial that appeared in the Daily Oklahoman in 1951. “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself gifts of money out of the public treasury. After that the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy.”

    I. What Can We As Believers Do?

“For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like starts in the universe as you hold out the word of life.” ~ Philippians 2: 13-16

Our natural reaction is to do the two things the Bible says BELIEVERS ARE NOT TO DO Believers are told to not complain Believers are told not to argue

II. As Believers We Must Teach A New Generation Truth That Secular Educators are Not Teaching

Historian W. E. Woodward wrote: “The name of Jesus Christ is not mentioned even once in the vast collection of Washington’s published writings.” (George Washington, The Image and The Man, pg 142) Our problem is parents who want to place the responsibility for rearing children into the hands of educators.

Parents: Responsible for teaching morals Responsible for teaching ethics Responsible for teaching the word of God Responsible for teaching manners, respect for authority,’ Responsible for teaching about salvation through Jesus Christ

THE PRIMARY PLACE FOR TEACHING CHILDREN ABOUT THE BIBLE AND GOD HAS NEVER BEEN IN PUBLIC SCHOOL BUT THE RESPONSIBILITY HAS ALWAYS BEEN IN THE HOME.

III. Believers Must Pray Diligently When As Our Moral And Spiritual Foundations Crumble

“If my people, who are called by name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. “ ~ 2 Chronicles 7:14

2 Chronicles 7: 19 “I will uproot you from this land, I’ll reject this temple, and I will make you a laughing stock among the other nations.”

THREE THINGS BELIEVERS MUST DO 1. We must repent of our self-righteousness 2. We must study the political issues carefully and we must vote according to our convictions 3. We must and this is the most important – we must pray.

“You do not receive because you do not ask” ~ James 4:2

    I. What Is The Correct Position To Assume When We Pray?

II. God Want Believers To Learn There Are Times When We Need To Be Quiet As We Pray

“when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent” ~ Psalm 4:4

“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” ~Psalm 27:14

“If you do not transform your pain, you will surely
transmiit”~ Richard Rohr I. Why Do Believers Often Experience Unfair Hurts?   Why does God allow pain in our lives? He often permits pain to bring us closer to Him Because God has allowed this to provide us with the opportunity to learn more about  him II. Forgiving Others Is Necessary For Our Health WE ALL KNOW INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE ALWAYS READY TO POINT OUT THE TROUBLES, DEFECTS, FAULTS, AND THE BLEMISHES.  BACKBITING- MEANS TO SHOUT AT THE OTHER PERSON IN GREAT RAGE Profane talk-this is a person who enjoys, takes delight in slandering others. III. Forgiveness Means To Release A Painful Experience And Release The One Who Caused It FORGIVENESS IS FORGETTING WHAT SOMEONE HAS DONE TO HURT US FORGIVENESS IS NOT RECONCILING WITH OUR OFFENDER Forgiveness and reconciliation are two different actions. FORGIVENESS HAS NO CONDITIONS RECONCILIATION HAS CONDITIONS

FORGIVENESS SHOULD BE OFFERED WHETHER THE OTHER PERSONS ADMITS A WRONG OR NOT
RECONCILIATION CAN ONLY HAPPENED AFTER REPENTANCE AFTER ADMIT THEY HAVE WRONGED YOU FORGIVENESS RELEASES THE DEBTOR TO GOD TO FORGIVE means we understand people to sin Reconcile is separate but release them to God as quickly as you can for your own emotional health

II. God Gives Each One Of Us Unique Talents Talent – word we use in the English language comes from this word here in This biblical story. Means money-specifically around $1,000 dollars Today it means the natural gifts and abilities God has given each of us Vs 15 “To one He(that is God) gave 5,00, to another 2,000 and to another 1,000 talents, each according to his ability.” “we have different gifts according to the grace given to us” Romans 12:6 III.
